Lot description:
Roman Provincial

ARABIA, Philippopolis. Philip I. AD 244-249. Æ (27mm, 15.78 g, 6h). Struck at Antioch, circa AD 247-249. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Roma or Allat seated left on shield, holding two small figures and spear; S(retrograde)-C flanking. Butcher, Philippopolis & Samosata pl. 25, 12 var. (‘S’ not retrograde); Spijkerman 3 var. (same); Rosenberger var. 2 (same); SNG ANS 1403-5 var. (same). Near VF, green patina, minor roughness.

From the J.S. Wagner collection.

The two figures perhaps represent Philip’s parents. His father, Julius Marinus, was deified under the emperor and his bust is featured on coinage of this series struck for Philippopolis, almost certainly at Antioch.

Estimate: $100
